The Youth Center on base has produced a wonderful coloring book. The idea is that the students have created the coloring book with images of the things they wish they had known about South Dakota before they got here. They even did the drawings themselves. Feel free to print it off and make as many copies as you would like. It can really help make a child feel less apprehensive about an upcoming move.
If you have never heard of the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, you are not alone. This resource is only used by about 30% of those who qualify in the Black Hills. Just fill out the form, sign it and send it in. It takes about 60 days, but after that your child will receive a free, age appropriate book each month until their 5th birthday. It really is a good way to help them become interested in reading. I am attaching the form you need. As a reminder you will still need to fill out a form after you PCS even if your child is already on the program. The Post Office does not forward the books. You can read more at: http://www.unitedwayblackhills.org/imagination-library/
The Round table will begin with an opportunity to bring any education related concerns forward. We will also provide a $20 or less recipe, which will be available for sampling. Following this, or 1800, Ms. Hollie Strand from Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC), an international and interagency law enforcement organization, will share with us a presentation covering the following topics:
- Navigating the net: digital footprints, social media and what to share/keep private
- Cybercrimes: Cyber-stalking, sextortion, child pornography, child exploitation, sexting and online threats.
- Cyberbullying: What it is and what to do.
The Airman and Family Readiness center will be holding a deployment club for homeschooled families. All are welcome to attend. The first meeting will be 21 Sep 17, 1415, in the A&FRC (Suite 1500, Rushmore center).
Back to School Round-Up
26 August 2017
My dear Ellsworth family,
I am going to update you often through this site (www.ellsworthslo.org). I am excited to have this outlet to do that. Today, I want to tell you about the Back to School Round-Up. It will be held at the Pride Hangar on base from 1300-1500, 26 Aug 17. We have lots of exciting activities, presenters and prizes. We are even giving away a laptop and some iPads! Operation Homefront has been very generous again this year to provide us with backpacks filled with school supplies. We also have our bags of goodies, too. My daughter is most looking forward to the petting zoo. We also will have face-painting, temporary tattoos, a climbing wall, sensory tables, art experiences and lots of other hands-on stuff. A few special visitors will come by from Security Forces. I am hoping Sparky and McGruff will be making an appearance and I know everyone will love the Military Working Dogs. It is simply going to be awesome to get everyone together to celebrate our kids and military education, specifically it is exciting to do this while getting them ready to start the school year off on the right foot. It does not matter if they go to private, public or home school, please grab your kids and come join us!
